I'm Moving...

So, I have made a decision to move.

No...not literally ;) (even though I would LOVE to move into a larger, older, more romantic home than my current townhouse), I am actually just moving my blog.

I have always enjoyed the look and feel of Typepad blogs, and while for the past couple of years, I couldn't reconcile paying for a blog when it's free here at Blogger...I have come to realize...it's worth it! I feel as though I have out grown Bloggers capabilities, and the annoyance of how pictures are uploaded, among other things. With the new year, I have started to feel the need to "de-clutter" and freshen up my life in all sorts of ways. My house is getting a huge overhaul now that Christmas is over...and I will be sorting through all of my treasures striving to only keep the ones I love and cannot live without. (The rest may actually serve to benefit some of you as I pass them along to new homes via my website!).

So with all of that being said, I have also felt to need to spruce up my "blog space" and create a new, clean place to think and write. I have also changed the title to simply, "Thoughts from Alice W." While, I will always consider myself a "romantic at heart" I am enjoying simplicity these days...and felt that I didn't want to continue to "brand" my blog as romantic...there are so many sides to me!

So where can you find me you might be asking? Here is the new link (and I would sure appreciate it if you updated it on your sidebars if you have me there...I know it's a pain but it will make the transition one step easier for me!)

Our Holiday Home ~ Part I

I am so excited to let you all know that have finally gotten around to posting about our holiday home! This has been a true labor of love and has taken me hours and hours of editing and uploading to Blogger...for those of you who use it...you know what a process that can be! I am also so excited that some of these photos were taken with my new Christmas present. Josh got me this as well as a telephoto lens...and I have to tell you...the world of photography for me will never be the same. If you thought I was a photo addict before...just wait!

Today, you will be going on a tour from the entry way and through the living room. If you come back later this week, you will get to view our dining room.

So...shall we get started?

The wreath below was displayed on our coat closet with one of my curly feathered birds and a beautiful poem "Showing the Rabbit" sent to me by Madai of Wren Cottage.

I displayed all of our Christmas cards on a large pair of shutter doors...

And you have to love this vintage inspired card from Polly!

After having our tree for about three weeks, I was getting bored of the look and wanted to switch it up...so...I took everything off and started over! (I know I know...Josh thought it was crazy too!). I found this vintage foil Poinsettia in my studio and added it to the top...

And when I found these adorable pear ornaments at the Dollar Store, I decided to make Noelle "a Partridge in a Pear Tree"...

The new look for the tree included several little nests of eggs and birds, and pale aqua and faux mercury glass ornaments...

I also decided late in the game to 'winterize' the corner shelf behind the tree...

My mom gave me this cute Christmas church which found a home on our coffee table...

Exciting News! Great FFM Finds!

A couple of weeks ago, Josh and I were thrilled that he was featured on Etsy's blog The Storque. Imagine our delight, when today, I was featured as well! For both articles they chose our pieces/photos for the header image! I wrote about Josh's feature on his blog which you can read about here, and if you want to see mine you can view it here.

Since the holidays are just wrapping up, I haven't had any time to stock new items in my shop. BUT...I have some exciting news for you. For Christmas, my mom's gift from me was her own website! I haven't had time yet to create a spectacular design for her...unfortunately I had to put her on the "waiting list"...lol, since I have so much work! I have been patiently waiting for this magazine to come out since the summer...and now it is finally here! I am so thrilled to have two featured articles in it...the first is about little ol' Romantic Thoughts in their "Blogs with a View" section...I wrote about an experience that I shared with Sheila R. of Blessed and Distressed and a special connection that we made right here in blogland! You can read the original post about "the doll" here and Sheila's post about receiving it here.
I was also stunned when Jenny Doh, the editor of this fabulous magazine, asked me to send in my paper cones and write an article about them as well!
Two of these are currently available on my site in my Collage Art Collection. Unfortunately, the aqua and pink one received a little damage in the mail, so that one will just have to have a special home here in our studio ;).

And imagine my delight when I traveled to the back of the magazine and found one of my photos featured in the Miscellany category! (This photo is currently available for sale on my site).

Well, I hope you will forgive my gloating...I just can't help myself...hehe! This is by far one of the best publications out there for living an inspired life, and I am so honored to be featured! I do hope when it comes out (January 1st) that you will get a copy and see all of the wonderful art and inspiration it contains!

We actually set it up some time ago, just never used it...and...since he isn't really much of a "blogger", now I will be doing most of the posting...that's what wives are for right...lol?

My Cup Runneth Over...

Today, is Heather's Pretty Little Christmas party, that I had planned to participate in...however...the house is quite messy, and I haven't had even one spare moment to start cleaning it up for nice photographs of our holiday decor. So, I apologize to any of you heading this way hoping to find that here. I do promise that I will be posting photos here very soon!

Instead, I wanted to take time today...on my 27th birthday (yay!)...to reflect on how blessed I am and have been by so many friends and loved ones. It's truly remarkable to me, that even in these very hard economic times, that people would bestow upon me such beautiful gifts. I cannot say thank you enough to all of you, for how your love has filled my heart with joy!

Now, I hope you will enjoy my "Pretty Little Birthday" party while you are here with me!

First...I want to say thank you to Sandi of Wayside Treasures, for sending me a very wonderful package the other day! I was actually the first place winner in her giveaway! Like I told her, the last thing I remember winning was a coloring contest in 3rd grade...so this was a real treat!

How perfect is this gold fleur-de-lys? Love it!

And Sandi makes the most beautiful vintage-inspired tags that I have ever seen...

Sandi had posted a blog about her collection of these, and I was admiring them so much. We were emailing about them, and I told her that I had yet to find any...now I have my first one! Maybe one day I will have a collection as lovely as hers!

Another package also arrived the same day with a sweet birthday/Christmas card from Lesley of Flatwoods Folk Art.

My mother always manages to make me feel like a princess for my birthday, and I always love the surprises I receive from her, as they are usually vintage/antique items that are truly one of a kind. Like this gorgeous platter. She has had it for awhile and I alway mention how much I love it...now it's in my dining room ;)
And these beautiful old hat pins just show how even the smallest of treasures can bring joy to your heart...

The other night my youngest sister, Destiney (she's 5), had a ballet recital at her church. It was amazing...and she looked beautiful! Sadly, my camera battery died when I got there, so I couldn't take any photos. After it was over, my dad, my step-mother, my brothers (I have 3 who are 15, 12, and 10), and Destiney, all gave me my birthday presents...including this handmade card...

They each wrote me a sweet note and Destiney drew me several lovely pictures. Here are Mary and Baby Jesus...

She also created for me the most beautiful bracelet...all on her own!

She is so talented! I will cherish this forever... Together, they also all gave me a wonderful gift...a cashmere sweater! It is so soft and comfortable...I had Josh take of photo of me wearing my new things even though I hate getting my picture taken (this is for you Dad, Jennifer, Malachi, Jaron, Ezra and Destiney!). After making Josh take about 15 or so shots (I was unhappy with them all!)...this is the one that turned out best. We realized later that you can't really see the sweater...but Renoir kept turning his head during some, and I kept closing my eyes in the others...so at least you can see some of it!

And yes...

I truly am blessed!

Oh Christmas Tree...Oh Christmas Tree...

How lovely are your branches! And this year's tree branches are decorated in pearl garland and lots of gold, silver and ivory ornaments! For a touch of Old World charm, I added vintage hand written Christmas postcards and antique cabinet cards of children and babies. Our little tree was bound at the bottom in a burlap sack (makes watering it an interesting time!), and propped up on an old trunk and suitcase.

A few vintage glittery gold ornaments can be found around too!

Nestled at the top of our tree is our resident bird, whom we have affectionately named "Noelle." She has created a warm and cozy home for herself and watches over our tree by day and night. Above Noelle, a handmade "Peace on Earth" ornament reigns.

Beside our tree, you will find another old suitcase, a wooden child's chair, and a basket filled with vintage lace and trim...an old silver Teddy Bear bank has found a cozy place to rest here...

And beside our tree...our little cast iron Rabbit has perched...

And guess who is tired after all of that decorating? Me, no. I'm off to do more!

But...as for Renoir...that's another story!

A special package arrived the other day...a special order from Madai of Wren Cottage. While I am keeping secret, until my next Vignette of the Moment, what was lovingly tucked inside...I had to share the charming wrapping...

As Christmas quickly approaches, it is time to get busy filling up all that space under the tree! In past years, I have been quite a "late" shopper...but am hoping to change that this year...and finally be one of those people who can say they have all of their shopping done well before Christmas Eve...but...we shall see...

Christmas Vignette

So I have gone and done it again...made more design changes! Now...my Romantic Vignettes page has been given a brand new look. I wanted it to flow more with my website, and I felt it was about time it got a face lift...it has had the same design since I created the page two years ago. Since it is still a "work in progress" some features are not available yet. I want to revamp the archives as well, so currently they cannot be viewed, but I will work at getting them back up asap. But...in the meantime...I wanted to share the first Christmas vignette of the season. It comes from the charming home of Tina of Sweet Biscuit Paper and Press. She has done such a fantastic job with her tree and holiday decor...and I am thrilled to show it off! I hope you will stop by to check it out if you haven't done so yet. Here is a little sneak peek to whet your whistle...

A Call to Help

A couple of weeks ago I was deeply moved by the story of an 11 year old boy, diagnosed with Leukemia. His name was Brenden Foster and his wish was to help feed the homeless. This selfless boy was courageous till the end. Sadly, he died last Friday, and since his story made such an impact in my own life, I wanted to share it with you.

This article tells of the impact Brenden had with his efforts to feed the homeless. It is a great reminder for all of us...especially as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. We truly have so much to be thankful for.

It's the opening my dear friend Tracie's "petite" shop! I had the pleasure of working on her website design some months ago and have come to know her quite well. She is a true gem and someone that I am so blessed to have had the chance to meet through this little place we call Blogland. I only wish we didn't live so many miles apart (New York and California...a bit of a stretch!). But even though all of that distance separates us...it has not prevented us one bit from forming a kindred bond.

Thanks still to those of you praying for my uncle and his family. We visited him on Veteran's Day...he is a veteran ;). We were delighted to find him sitting up in a wheelchair and talking much more than on our other visits. He seems to be making a lot of progress and will no doubt continue to do so over the next few months. It is exciting to see how quickly God moves to heal!

My sister has requested my help for a class she is currently taking as she works towards her Bachelor's degree...but really she needs your help! First of all...I cannot say thank you enough to all of you who have sent me, my Uncle Larry and my family well wishes and prayer support. It really means the world to me! I will hopefully be getting up to the hospital tomorrow or Saturday to visit Larry again, and will update on how his progress is going next week. Thanks to everyone for reminding me that people really do care and that asking for prayer is okay! ;)

Another big giant "thank you" to send along...is to my dear friend Tracie of My Petite Maison. We recently worked on a couple of big design projects together...one of which you can visit now here, and the other is coming soon! Tracie sent the most wonderful package to me last week...and both Renoir and I were thrilled!

Renoir's gift was perfectly decorated for the holiday...

He knew right away something was for him and started pulling at the tissue. I let him pull the gift out of the bag himself...which took him running all around the house with a lion half out of a paper bag...but it was fun to see how excited he got! How cute is his newest addition to the family?

My gift was wrapped in gorgeous paper with a lovely postcard on the front with the letter "A". Inside I first found several tea bags...these ones are in fabric sachets and are from Paris...très chic!

And I have enjoyed the Vanilla flavor (also from France) the past two nights...delicious!

There was a beautiful Eiffel Tower card...and a pair of these stunning fleur-de-lis glasses. They are so beautiful, that I am almost afraid to use them, for fear they might break! I also got to see, in person for the first time, one of my own business card designs. Tracie has a front and back designed card...and it is beautiful (even if I do say so myself...lol!)...

So another big merci to Tracie! You have no idea what your kindness and generosity means to me (and Renoir!). We love everything, and I am so blessed to call you my friend!

Prayers Requested...

I am typically not the kind of person who feels comfortable asking for others to pray for me or my family... But I am asking for your prayers now. My uncle Larry...whom I love so much, had a massive stroke last Thursday. My family is extremely close, so this is a very difficult time for everyone. If you even have one spare moment in your day, maybe you could just send a little prayer up for him and his recovery. He has a wife, two daughters and four young grandchildren who all love him so much...so please be praying for all of them too.

I will be busy this next week or so and will be scarce...but I appreciate all of the love and support that all of the amazing friends I have met through this blog and my site have shown me these last couple of years.

I have been a very scarce blogger these days...but just wanted to pop in and say I'm still here! I also wanted to share some inspirational shots of nature from some of my favorite Flickr friends! The whether is getting colder here...it got down in to the 30's the other night! Brrr! Passion Roses

For the last few weeks, everytime I go to our local grocery store (Wegman's is much more than that though for those of you who don't have them near you!), I flock to these green roses that they have. So I was delighted when Josh came home with them on our anniversary. Aren't they beautiful! They are called "Passion" roses...

I put most of them in this pretty vase (one of my absolute favorites!) and enjoyed photographing them...

I also put a small grouping in one of my favorite antique creamers in the foyer...

It was a laid back anniversary this year, yet still romantic. We stayed in, and Josh made my favorite meal...chicken parmesan. We enjoyed some white wine, cuddling with Renoir, and watching Project Runway (Josh will kill me for telling you that part!) for the rest of the evening...

Thanks to all of you who sent your anniversary well wishes to us...it made us feel so special!

I have been keeping very busy lately completely redoing every room in my home and thought I would share one of my latest projects. I have become quite enamored with all things gray...and have, therefore, wanted to paint everything in various shades of it! I had this old closet door put away because I couldn't figure out what to do with it, and decided one day to paint it a darker shade of bluish gray. I was thrilled with the outcome, and now it is displayed in the living room next to my favorite old screen. I love how the colors compliment each other so well.

For the technique I used a dry brush and did a wash finish, being sure to leave some of the wood exposed. I wanted to give it an aged, worn look. I will share more photos of my home as it comes along.

Fall Inspiration...

Lately, I have been very inspired by everyone's fall decoration and displays seen on blogs and Flickr. I have been living vicariously through them...since I haven't decorated for the season yet myself. One in particular that caught my eye, was the decorated porch of Rebecca Lewis of Simply Stated Aesthetics. She has a beautiful old porch that is richly decorated for Halloween and the autumn season. It is currently featured as the latest "Vignette of the Moment" in my Romantic Vignettes feature. Be sure to stop by and be inspired!

I decided about two weeks ago to give my house the once over and completely redecorate everything...no small task (just ask my husband...;)! So the thought of adding more for the season is just not in the cards right now for me. I just finished the living room...and started the dining room last night...so within a couple of weeks I should be where I want. I have been scouring magazine racks for inspiration and thought I would share my latest finds...

Country French, that I found at Borders, is a new favorite...

With my own home...although many, many, many miles away from France...I am trying to capture a bit of French essence with my decor. I am attempting at a more relaxed, lived in and welcoming feel. I especially love this interior:

I was also able to find the latest issue of Country Victorian, which I haven't seen for some time.

When I found this article, near the back of the magazine, I was enthralled. I am loving anything gray...bluish gray...greenish gray...etc. lately and this set is stunning! It comes form the home of Nikki Renshaw of The English Eccentric Home.

I also purchased some magazines with definite fall flair...and to help inspire me in my artistic endeavors... There is a fabulous article in Home Companion featuring the home of Rebecca Purcell, formerly of ABC Carpet & Home (a very inspirational site!). As well as several great articles on homes decorated for the season...so if you are needing inspiration on that end, I highly recommend it!

Hey everybody! Flea Market Friday is here already! I really don't know how the weeks seem to go by so fast! I know I have been a really sparse blogger these past few months. Thanks to all who send emails checkin in on me! I have been very busy "reprioritizing" my life and business, which leaves only a short window these days for blogging.

I have been working hard at my design work lately, and wanted to share some of my latest available designs for those of you who might be looking to update your site or for those who are looking to start one. A Change of Heart...

As many of you know, besides creating artwork and selling home decor products, I also offer my own website and graphic design work. I have been doing this for a little over a year now, and for the most part have enjoyed it. However, the last few months, things started to change for me. I started to get run down and felt exhausted everyday. Furthermore, changes were made to one of the hosts I work with that dramatically changed how much business I was receiving. All of this on top of a few frustrating experiences, left me feeling that maybe I needed to move on and pursue other career paths.

I spent the month of August considering this, even putting up notice on my site that I would be reducing the amount of available designs and was no longer available for custom work. Some of you may have even contacted me during that time, to find that the case. It was a very difficult and dark month for me, unsure of what direction to go in.

I considered outside employment to bring in steady income, but even as I was searching for work and going on interviews, something inside of me didn't want to let go. I have a deep need to use my creativity and passion everyday. It can be seen in everything I do...my work...my home...the gifts I give to friends and family...etc.

So, after thinking on it for a bit, many lengthy discussions with my husband, and tearful prayers, I came to the decision to continue with this passion. Perhaps, I just needed a little "vacation" from it for that month to regroup and get reconnected with what I truly love...and that is being creative...and helping others pursue their own dreams of having a beautiful online shop or blog.

So all of this is to say...that I'm Back!!! And if I turned away your work during that month, I extend to you my sincerest apologies and hope that you will understand what I was going through, and that I needed to be away for a bit. However, I am currently available and ready to go with whatever design needs you may have! So email me and/or visit my website and check out my designs. I am thrilled to be back focused on what I love with a clear new perspective!

Charming Lititz

As those of you who follow my blog know, Josh and I recently went on a trip to Southern, Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago. Our goal was to visit Lancaster and see if it was an area we might want to move to. We ended up finding the most charming little town just a few minutes outside of the city. While watching the "Lancaster" channel in the hotel room (hehe...it had a lot of good info on the city and it's surroundings!), I heard about this historic town called Lititz and thought that we must go see it. It ended up only being about 5 minutes from our hotel, so on Sunday morning we drove over for a visit. It really is the kind of town you could fall in love with.

The idyllic setting is filled with tree lined streets, quaint shops and cafes, cobblestone and brick buildings, and friendly people. Josh enjoyed a cappucino from the cafe above. Then we decided to stroll around and get a feel for the place.

Since it was Sunday, almost all of the shops were closed...but I enjoyed window shopping instead.

I also love finding small towns with gorgeous old homes. I have a penchant for anything cobblestone or painted brick. The one below being one of my favorites...

After wandering down the main road for a bit, we veared off and found the cutest little shop tucked away in a parking lot with some other antique shops nearby...

Unfortunately, Archaeologie was closed...but I certainly enjoyed peeking in the windows and enjoying the beautiful store front decor. In fact, I enjoyed it so much...that this is the current "Vignette of the Moment" on my Romantic Vignettes page. How I wish I could have gone inside to look at all of their vintage goodness up close...like that table! I love it! Guess for now, I will just put it on my list of "things to do" when we return!

New Adventures...

Lots of new adventures are being had by Joshua, me and Renoir this summer! We have been going on lots of "summer outings" to various parks and lakes in our area. One of my favorite, ever since I was little, is Stoneybrook Park...it has everything...waterfalls, old bridges, and paths...we took Renoir, for the first time, a few weeks back.

We also found that Renoir loves to swim!!! He is obsessed. If we even get near water he starts whining and running as fast as he can...

Must swim...must swim...must catch fish (he hasn't yet, thankfully, but he tries!)...

Since he is still relatively "new" to the water we still keep him on the leash...but you can see how that works out (or not...lol!) in this video...

and he loves riding in the car...so long as he can put his head out the window...

Josh and I are off on an adventure of our own tomorrow...we are heading out of town to visit friends and visit Lancaster, PA. We are very excited, as we are considering moving to the area and possibly purchasing our first home! Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated on this exciting...new...and at times scary process!

If there is one thing I love...it is getting unexpected gifts!!! And if there is one thing I love more...it is giving beautiful gifts! Lately, I have had the pleasure of both and witnessing others do the same...

First of all...several weeks ago I received a few gifts from the fabulous, Polly, and have been so busy that I never posted about these sweet "blessings". Polly really has to be one of the most generous and caring souls out there. I cannot thank her enough for all the wonderful ways she has showered me with kindness!

Look at this gorgeous old silver spoon she sent me out of the blue!

And a fleur-de-lis on the back! (My favorite!)

Prior to these, she also sent me an adorable little teacup and blue plate...I will hopefully get some photos of those taken really soon to show you how beautiful they both are.

Also, a few weeks back, I found a package in the mail that I didn't remember ordering...and what should it be? But a surprise package from Christine Annette! Christine can really fill a package!

And with stuff that you feel is too good to be free!

The bags were filled with vintage goodness...old buttons, lace, ephemera, and so much more! I couldn't believe my eyes and was left speechless at Christine's generosity. What did I ever do to deserve such an abundance??? Thank you again Christine from the bottom of my heart!

I have also been doing some gift giving of my own lately. My mother's birthday was on June 17th, and my sister and I surprised her on her lunch break at her work. She really was so surprised and happy to see us...I think we could have done just that and she would have been happy enough...lol!

I LOVE to wrap gifts, especially in unique ways or with special touches. Using vintage patterns is one of my favorite "unconventional" ways to wrap a gift. This one was embellished with a beautiful tag given to me by Sherri of Antique Paperie...

And here is one of the gifts Josh and I got for her...at Marshall's no less...but it was so pretty and I knew it would fit nicely in her blue kitchen...

I also found her the prettiest bouquet of pink and white roses...

That I enjoyed photographing before giving them away ;)

Someone else receiving gifts lately was my little sister Destiney. If you scroll back a few posts you can read about her 5th birthday party that was held at my house...but later that week she had a tea party with her friends at her house. It was of course Disney Princess themed! The teacups and saucers they used were given to me for my bridal shower and were perfect for such an event!

French Inspired...

My latest artistic creations have been French-inspired. The above is the latest in my line of Romantic Notions collages. It features an image that was generously shared by Dawn of The-Feathered-Nest. Dawn always has the best images to use in artwork and she is so kind to share them with us all!

I added some dried pink roses, vintage sheet music, and old white buttons to this piece...

The other French-inspired piece I finished recently was this "Royal Marie" altered bottle...

Most of us cannot get enough Marie Antoinette these days...and I am no different! I have also had a penchant for all things pale blue lately, so it seems fitting that it should follow through to my art...

This piece is embellished with lots of "royal" accoutrements and lots of bling!

Romantic Arrangements...

I couldn't resist posting one more time before I go away this weekend. Lately I have been getting a lot of fresh flowers, to dry and use in my artwork, but in the meantime, I have enjoyed putting them in arrangements around the house. Like these little carnations in shades of pink and peach...

I put a small bouquet in an antique creamer....

I am in love with this china so much! My mom just gave it to me a couple of weeks ago and I love the details on it...

This is another small bouquet in a tiny off white pitcher of only the peachy-fuchsia carnations...

I am typically not a "Carnation girl" but I do love how they look when dried...and these ones with the dark pink edge will be quite beautiful I think!

A larger arrangement was placed in this old porcelain vase between my new cherub lamps...

I also love to take the ones that fall off and place them around...these old keys were in an old trunk we have (filled with treasures!)...I pulled them out to enjoy...

Although not flowers...Josh brought me home the tiniest strawberries yesterday, that he found while on an outing with Renoir...

How cute are these?

He also picked me a bouquet of Sweet Peas...even though they are wild, I have always loved them...

I have been very busy getting my living room redecorated and found the prettiest bouquet of Esperance roses at the supermarket last night...I knew they would look gorgeous on our dining table! I couldn't even wait till the next day to photograph them, so I got out the camera last night at 11pm to shoot these...

I took more this afternoon, so you could seem in normal lighting...

(I will show the full dining room sometime soon!)

They are really the prettiest roses I have ever seen!

I put them in my most favorite old Ironstone pitcher...it has cracks, stains and crazing...which is why I love it soooo much!

Romantic Notions...

I have been sooo busy lately which is why I haven't posted for over a week! I have had lots of orders for website and graphic design work which has consumed much of my time...but Josh and I did take time this weekend to go to the flea market...which I am so thankful for! As we were nearing the end of the vendor booths, a woman had a few things still out and in a large laundry basket were several rolls of embossed wallpaper. It looked like tin ceiling tile designs and I was immediately drawn to it. The paper wasn't old...but still has an antique/Victorian look about it. She offered the entire basket of rolls for quite a deal, so I couldn't say no!

When I came home, I immediately went to work...cutting, finding bits and pieces to create into beautiful collages...and a new line of art was born! I have been referring to them as "Romantic Notions"...I love that they coordinate so well with romantic decor and each one has vintage sewing notions incorporated into the design.

I have been busy tying together tiny bundles of dried pink roses and flowers with twine...and finding the perfect old buttons to coordinate with each collage.

I have also included vintage text pages from French books and bits of old lace and crocheted trim to some...

One even has a little nest with three small eggs...this one is called "Ethereal Equations"...

I have listed a couple of them for sale on my website. The above ones are not as of yet, but the ones below are....this one is called "Heavenly Heart."

And the one below, I am especially in love with because I incorporated one of my own photos printed on recycled brown paper and a quote by J. M. Barrie...

"God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December"...

I also finally got my card for Karla's Great Aunt Caroline done! I have been so busy lately that I completely forgot I said I would make one...but really wanted to, so even though it will be late, I made one with my new wallpaper. I hope she likes it!

I am so in love with this wallpaper! When I own a home I think I will cover all of the walls with different styles of it...lol! And it's even paintable! So fabulous!

Some other new art pieces I have been working on are these altered bottles. I have wanted to make some of these for several months, just never found the time to do it...and then this weekend I finally sat down and altered and adorned these two...

One has a transferred image of an antique baby photo and the other has an illustrated clipping from a Victorian magazine dating back to 1905...

My mother recently gave me a ton of vintage clip-on earrings which I love to embellish with...

I usually remove the backs before adhering them...it's amazing how many beautiful clip-on earrings you can find at sales and vintage shops...

I added this text to the bottle...

The bottles each have a smattering of vintage buttons in coordinating colors...

I have always loved this "Little Boy Blue" bottle and was waiting for the perfect way to adorn it...

I purchased these little blue clay flowers recently and knew they would be perfect on this one...

Both bottles with be available for sale on my site asap, so look for them coming soon!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all of the caring, loving, hard working fathers and grandfathers out there who do so much for us everyday!

In honor of today, I wanted to share some photos of my dad and me. These are all from my wedding in 2006. Before it was time to walk down the aisle that day, my father was the last one with me in the Bride's room, that for much of the day, had been filled with women and girls running about, chaos and noise...but as the time drew near and the room cleared out...it was just my father and me.

He drew me close and was ready with tissues as the tears came to my eyes. He prayed for me and my future husband and gave me the most beautiful necklace I had ever seen. It was one of the most special times of my whole life. It was his strength that carried me down the aisle. If I did not have him to lean on and reassure me with his peaceful nature, I don't know how I would have gotten through...not only for my wedding...but my life...

My dad has always been such a caring, thoughtful and tender-hearted man. His sensitivity is rare and so hard to find...which is why I appreciate it so much.

I still get choked up whenever I hear Bridge Over Troubled Water, which was the dance we shared together that day. The words speak of our relationship...and the love my dad has for me...

So, on this Father's Day...I just want to say...Dad, I love you so much. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for me. Your love and support have carried me through...and I wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you for being my bridge over troubled water...I love you!

And The Princess Turns 5...

Last Sunday, my little sister, Destiney, turned 5 years old!!! Since nothing major had been planned by Saturday, I decided to call up my step-mother and offer to throw a party for her the following day (crazy I know! I think sometimes I thrive on the pressure...lol!).

We decorated the whole inside and outside (I put the design at the top on our front door for when she entered) with white streamers, pink balloons, and Disney Princess everything (since that is her favorite!). And if you ask her what her favorite color is...it's "pink sparkly"...such a girl!!! My step-mother brought the cake...all pink and purple of course...

And we gave her gifts periodically throughout the party (the dress she is wearing below was actually given to her a few minutes before this photo...after one of my little brothers "accidentally" hit her with a water balloon outside...hehe...she was crying until she realized it meant she got to open a gift...inside was this adorable dress that my sister Angela gave to her...)

And after I saw how much she enjoyed the "irunning" at the museum the week before (see the post below), Josh and I found her a set...she was so excited! As she was opening it, she started yelling, "I saw this and wanted it!!!" She enjoyed finding all of the vintage linens around my house to "irun"...and I let her take a few home to enjoy...

Here she is showing off the dress...and pink sunglasses also given to her by my other sister, Angela...she looked like she stepped right out of the 1950's!!!

She LOVES being in front of the camera...she starts posing even before the camera turns on...maybe she'll be famous one day...hehe!

Tomorrow, I am going to her house, where she is having a tea party with 5 of her friends...will be showing off more photos of that next week!

And in other news...every morning this past week, I have been eager to go outside and see how all of my pink roses are blooming. It is like my own little miracle everyday! The Strong National Museum of Play

Last week, my step-mother and I took my little sister, Destiney, and brother, Ezra, to the Strong Museum of Play here in Rochester. I hadn't been there for many years...since school field trips when I was in about 2nd or 3rd grade...but...I still remember the feeling I got when we went upstairs to their collection of antique toys and miniatures. I was obsessed (and still am!) with doll houses and doll house furniture and they have a huge collection of these. I can still remember being in awe as we walked passed each case and I could see all the intricate details of the houses. The museum has changed a lot since then...become much more "modernized" and "kid" friendly...but they still house these treasures plus more that I never knew they had!

On the first floor, there are tons of things to jump on, play in, and experiment with for the younger ones...Ezra and Destiney were so sweet together all day...

They have a replica of Sesame Street with lots of fun things to do...like seeing yourself on TV with Elmo, sitting in Big Bird's "nest" and so much more...everything is interactive and hands on...

Destiney enjoyed finding Cinderella's slipper later in the day in their "Reading Adventureland"...

And we found a table where you could make your own paper crown...so of course...we did! Even Ezra joined in when we were playing "King and Queen"...

They have a really beautiful carousel inside as well which we took a ride on...

and a train to ride around...

Girls and their shoes! She just kept finding them everywhere ;)

The special exhibit they currently have is the Berenstain Bear's...

We were a little surprised by how short they were in person ;-p

And one of the favorite things about the Strong museum is the replica of Wegman's (Rochester's local grocery store chain)...where the kids get to shop and play store...

You can only take 5 items at a time though...so we had to come back around several times...lol!

It really is so cute to see how they have it all set-up...very realistic!

Then you get to check out just like in the store...with real printed receipts and everything...here she is double checking...hehe...

And I loved how the walls were decorated with vintage ads...

One of my favorite things in the play area is the old fashioned house at "One History Place"...this is the kitchen...

If it were bigger I would want it for my own! I love the color the wood is painted and all the bead board cupboards and wainscoting!

Destiney's favorite thing to do was iron (or as she calls it "irun")...

She literally did this for at least 5 minutes straight...

Then she decided to "cook" for me on the old stove...

We also enjoyed a "spot" of tea in the dining room...which we of course dressed up for (photos of me not shown here...hehe)...

And the parlor was adorable...very elegant and Victorian...

There was even this gorgeous light fixture...

The attic is in the middle and is a few steps up...it has old trunks filled with old fashioned clothes for dress up and tons of classic children's books...

And in a glass case there was a miniature millinery shop!

Throughout the museum, no matter where you go, you can find antique and vintage items...like these old cards...

and these old nautical items...

My favorite find downstairs, was a case filled with vintage Alice in Wonderland items like this old book...

and this Alice doll...I want to keep her!

And how cute is the Duchess?

And good old Tweedledum and Tweedledee...

I adored these vintage birdcages too! There were many more antique finds throughout the downstairs including old typewritters, books, and so much more!

When we finally got upstairs...I was giddy with excitement...I just knew all those old treasures were waiting for me! They have a HUGE collection of antiques! I adored this baby scale...

And this pair of dancing dolls...

and these cute porcelain cats...

There were also rows and rows of vintage china and pottery...look at all the transferware!

Then I finally started to see what I had been waiting for...the doll houses!!! I was sooo excited...heart racing...eyes widening...

the excitement building with each step...

and then guess what happened????

The battery in my camera died.

heart sinking....sadness rising...

So, unfortunately, I have no more photos....and it gets even more sad...there were rows and rows and rows of antique porcelain dolls that I would have loved to show off here as well. And the doll houses were amazing. Just as exciting as I remembered. Perhaps when I get Josh to bring me back (wink, wink to him!)...I will run upstairs first and get all the photos I want!

After we toured the vintage and antique collection we also got to tour their Butterfly "Dancing Wings" exhibit (another fabulous photo opt gone awry!)...they were so many and they were all so beautiful. The garden area was stunning as well with a small waterfall, Coy fish pond, pergolas, and tons of pretty plants and flowers! I would love to go back and get photos in there too (next time...sigh).

A Belated Blog Anniversary

It just dawned on me today, that my blog has reached (and passed) it's one year anniversary! I cannot believe that I have been doing this blog since May 29, 2007...can you?!!! I decided to take a look back on where it all started...with my first post called "Romance is a Way of Life"...which only received two comments...and one was from me...hehe! I guess we have come a long way! I still live by the same motto, however, so some things never change! My hope is that through this past year I have helped bring a little "romance" to your life by means of this blog...and hope that I will continue to do so in even more abundance in the future.

I just want to say thank you to all of you who visit my little blog and care about the things that I have to say. Sometimes I wonder why I bother to do all this...does it really even matter, I find myself asking? And then I receive your warm, thoughtful and sincere comments and emails...and I am humbly reminded.

I have made so many wonderful friends here in "blogland" over the past year...and really cherish each and everyone of you! I can't picture my life without this place and all of you now! You have given me so much inspiration from your own blogs, and thoughtful words left on mine...so THANK YOU!

and I pray abundant blessings to all who visit here...

A New Vignette and Garden Update

I have been quite bad at keeping up with mentioning when a new vignette has been posted here on my blog...sorry about that! Other happenings around here...Josh and I have been doing lots more work in our "gardens"...I enjoy calling them that even though they mostly consist of two slabs of concrete...one small one in the front for the porch and one large one in the back...that's what you get in townhouse living! But I am doing my best to spruce them up and make them as romantic as possible.

Josh was so sweet this week (and every week of course!)...but this week...he bought me a little white wrought iron bistro set with roses on it (above)...so pretty! It's not old, but I am hoping that the weather will help it to fit in with my "old" and "chippy" lifestyle.

I got sick of waiting for seeds to grow, so we also headed out to Lowe's this week for some flowers that were already blooming (I am a bit impatient...lol!). We purchased the above pink annuals and lots of petunias...

and these cute pink Impatiens...

The other day, I noticed the first buds growing on our Billy Graham rose bush that greets you as you enter our home. I was so excited!

Can't wait till they start to bloom!

One of the rose bushes we planted about a month ago never took off, so we replaced it with these bright pink ones that were already nicely blooming...

As usual, I still have lots more planned for my little "gardens"...keep trying to convince Josh to get me a little picket fence for the backyard and I desperately want an arbor with a little gate...but we shall see if either of those things happen by the end of summer. Josh and I are both notorious procrastinators! But...I will keep you updated on all my latest gardening endeavors that do happen!

Little late on sharing some of my latest work with you, but I thought I would today anyways! I have been doing a lot of painting lately, while I took a break from custom web design work. Most of them have been small works done on canvas panels, so that they can easily be framed. This one, "Tiara and Roses," has sold already...but look for similar ones to be added soon!

The Lilac Festival

Every year, in May, the Lilac Festival is held here in Rochester. Hyland Park is covered with all different kinds of lilac trees that you can wander through and lose yourself in. It's one of my favorite things about Rochester.
From their website I found out that there are "1,200 lilac bushes that [display] a floral rainbow of more than 500 varieties, from deepest purple to purest white, from lightly scented to irresistibly aromatic. They cover 22 of Highland Park's 155 acres." Rochester is even recognized as developing some of the varieties that are transported around the world! Who knew in my little neck of the woods?!!

I think this variety is my favorite! I love the pale bluish-purple color...

Each tree is planted in someone's memory and has a little plaque attached...

and the pink ones! There really are too many to choose a favorite...lol!

The festival can be quite overwhelming with all the people...but it is lots of fun with good food (Our favorite is the sugared almonds! And this year I enjoyed a Grilled Chicken Caesar Panini for lunch! Delicious!) and talented vendors showing off their arts and crafts. Josh and I purchased a children's book from a local author...he signed it for my little sister Destiney's b-day in June...and had designed some plush animals to coordinate with the story...so we had to get one of those too!

They offer horse drawn carriage rides through the park...for which the horses get a special "hair do"...lol!

There are also several other blooming trees and flowers around at the same time...so there really is beauty everywhere!

It's always sad to me that the lilacs only bloom for about 2-3 weeks...but as soon as they are gone...I long for their return the next year! If you ever plan a trip to Rochester...do it in May...so you can stop by and smell the lilacs! I posted a lot more photos on Flickr if you haven't seen enough here...lol! Family Time

Last week, my mother and I, went up to visit my grandmother at the hospital she currently stays in. She has a lot of health issues and my 90 year old grandfather can no longer care for her alone...try as he might ;). I love visiting them both so much...esp. hearing the same stories I have heard a 100 times before...I still love them. They have given me so much and my grandmother...an oil painter in her day...is who I owe my "creative gene" to!

They were fascinated by my digital camera...everyone took a turn trying it out...this is Grandma's shot...not bad, huh?

I, of course, made my grandmother some special gifts...including this heart shaped wreath...

I also gave her some of my photos to hang in her room...which she loved! So it was a really wonderful visit...and I just pray there are several more in the future!

I also spent time at my father and step-mother's home Saturday, as we celebrated my brother Jaron's 12th birthday...which was on the 12th. Josh and I got him this "rip stick"...I had never heard of it before but he reallllllllly wanted one...

And because our younger brother Ezra (he's 9) already had one.....Jaron HAD to have one...lol!

Josh tried it out while we were there...and fell off a few times...lol! But overall he did pretty good ;).

I wouldn't get on that thing...but...since I was outside...I decided to try out the scooter. How hard could it be?

Hard!!! That's how! Hehe...I was going about an inch per minute...

These weren't the best shoes for it either...

Destiney (my 4 year old sister) can do it though!!! No fear at all...

The pros:

Destiney is the sweetest little thing ever...she picked me a bouquet...

of dead dandelions from the yard...

but I, of course,....loved them...

Some New Work...

Lately, I have been working on some new digital work using my photography. I love adding the definition of coordinating words, in a vintage typewritter font, to these works. The above photograph was actually taken in Montreal on my honeymoon...but with this affect...it looks like it could be an old chateau in France.

Joshua and I have both taken turns photographing this guy...and we love to call him "Contemplation." I prefer to use the definitions from our vintage dictionary. I find the choice of words to be much more eloquent than the modern ones.

The photograph above was taken last week at the Lilac Festival here in Rochester, NY. My sister and I took our mother for the day...and I spent hours photographing all the beautiful blooms (a seperate post about our trip to be coming soon!). I decided to edit this photo in Photoshop...give it my signature "glow" and added an old poem, I found, for my Mother's Day gift to my mom. I framed it for her in a white shabby chic frame.

It reads:

"Your love is like an island
in life's ocean, vast and wide,
A peaceful quiet shelter
From the rain and wind and tide.
Above it like a beacon light
Shone faith and truth and prayer;
And through the changing scenes of life,
I find a haven there."

because no matter how old I get...I continue to find a haven in my mother's love!

Where would we be without mothers?

A mother's existence helps us to feel safe, secure and loved in this world, and lets us know we are special...at least always to that one person. Even when, in life, it feels as though everyone has turned their back on us...hurt us...despised us...a mother will be there. A mother will love you even when you make the biggest mistakes...the worst choices. Even if you don't love her...her love carries on.

I don't know where I would be without the love of my mother. Growing up for me wasn't easy. My parent's had a difficult relationship that ended when I was about 6 years old. The difficulties a bad divorce can bring, inevitably took their toll on both my sister and me. Thankfully, with the love and support, and endless self-sacrificing of one strong woman...we made it through...

So as this Mother's Day approaches...I am left to wonder...how can I repay her? How can I give back for all that she has done? Really...it seems so impossible...

But one of the best things about mothers, is that they don't feel that same way. For them...the simplest things can bring the greatest joy. A handwritten note...a wildflower picked from the yard ...a simple thank you...all can bring tears to her eyes and warmth to her heart.

For those of you who have your mother with you, one of the best things you can do for them is to be thankful...be thankful everyday for their presence in your life. And if you mother is no longer with you, she continues to live on inside your heart. You carry her with you each and everyday...

For Mother's Day...I wanted to do something special for my mom because I love her so much ;). So, you will see throughout this post several photographs of her recently finished master bedroom suite. My mother painted and decorated this room all by herself and did such a fabulous job, that I wanted to show it off for her! The photos above, show a decorated toile box, tiny porcelain teacups and treasured antique and vintage pieces. The photo below is featured on my Romantic Vignettes page as the current "Vignette of the Moment":

This gorgeous antique vanity stool was recovered in pale pink satin...

My mother created this pretty bed drapery with fabric and rope...

A curtain tie-back created with burgundy trim and old skeleton keys holds back the romantic toile curtains...

Favorite collections can be found all throughout the room...like this little music box, that reminds me of my childhood, when I would put it in my dollhouse...

A corner vignette...

Mixed in with all of the Victorian decor are vintage and antique nautical pieces like the above wooden plaques, "captain's chair," the below bookends...

A little old trunk...

And an old ship...

I love how my mom has mastered juxtaposing masculine and feminine touches into one cohesive and romantic bedroom.

My Gardens...Thus Far...

Today was a quiet day here...after going out to lunch with my father and little brother to a little Asian restaurant...I came home to water my plants and decided to photograph the front and backyard gardens...even though much has yet to bloom.

Purchased these white flowers already fully blooming...but they are surviving...which is hard for me to manage...so I am quite proud of them...

Our porch is quite small, and everything on it is from the white family...of course...

This is our first rosebush...that will be pink when they bloom...

I put this broken teacup in the urn for the time being...

A grapevine wreath adorns our front door for the spring...

And several of these blooming bushes are on on the left-hand side of the porch...

I purchased a chippy garden pedestal at a sale a few weeks back, most likely it was used as a large candle holder...but I put this old French bowl, that has far too many chips to use, on top as a birdbath...

Picked a Magnolia while I was walking Renoir...and enjoyed photographing it around the garden...

Picked up several of these garden cherubs for only $3.00 each at a store a few weeks ago...they are placed around the front yard...

This one is either bored, tired...or perhaps daydreaming...

This one is praying that the peonies behind him and the rose bushes on the sides of him, will grow soon, to fill in and hide all the brown mulch...or maybe that's just me? Hehe..
Now, off to the backyard...which is far from finished...but I thought I would show off a few aspects to it...like this wall fountain we purchased just a couple of weeks ago...

I haven't purchased a large watering can yet...so for the time being I have been using this ceramic Peter Rabbit one (part of my Beatrix Potter collection)...

This giant blue teacup reminds me of something out of Alice in Wonderland...so whimsical and unique...and...only $5.00!

Found a couple of these little birds at a sale once and could never find the right place for them inside...but they fit in quite nice out here...

When more flowers start to bloom and we get the back yard all cleaned up, I will show more of our gardening ventures...hope you enjoyed the little tour of it thus far!

The Reservoir and a Path Through the Woods

Today, after Josh came home from work, we decided to go out for a bit...take Renoir somewhere that we had never been. We decided to visit Cobbs Hill Reservoir...the water reserve for Rochester, NY. It is actually a beautiful place with a path surrounding the iron-gated water, with trails through the woods and gorgeous old homes nearby. Renoir was of course thrilled to go on a new adventure...

He couldn't wait to get up to see what was behind that gate...

Unfortunately for him...it was just a big giant pool of water (Renoir is not a fan of water!), but for Josh and me...it was quite peaceful and serene.

I particularly enjoyed the detail of the lamp posts...

At a certain point as you travel around the Reservoir...you come to a clearing where you can see the Rochester skyline...our little city...

A beautiful blooming tree that served as a memorial...

As we continued walking, on one side near the woods...we came across a make-shift memorial tree, to celebrate the life of 16 year-old boy, who lost his life earlier this year in a sporting accident. It caused us to stop and reflect on how precious life is. I had not known about this boy before, but came home and learned that he was well loved by many...thus all the mementos left near the tree for him...

Upon further traveling the path surrounding the reserve, we eventually came to the Reservoir Building which is quite stately with its columns and ornamental lions...

The main door is painted white and mint green...

After staying on the main path for a bit...we decided to trapse off to a path we found in the woods...

It felt like a giant canopy was over us with all the leaves on the trees...

I enjoy finding the beauty in insignificant things...

This flower was so small that I almost walked right by it...before Josh pointed it out to me. Look at what we can miss if we're not paying attention...

We happened upon several blooming cherry blossom trees...

Some of the loveliest homes in Rochester are near this Reservoir...we got a peek at a few gorgeous backyards while we traveled the path...hope they don't mind our peeping!

Renoir was thoroughly enjoying his time here...he made several new "friends" in dogs that passed by...found several sticks to enjoy...

and even dug a hole!

A Green Thumb?

This is the first year that I have made an attempt at growing my own flower and plant garden. I have been "babying" some of these little guys indoors for a couple of weeks...waiting rather impatiently for them to show any signs of life...

Then one day...the first little sprout appeared! {Insert the halleluiah chorus here} The large basil leaves you see below were the first to grow...

I also planted some lavender and a floral mix that the lovely Polly sent me (thus inspiring my whole, "I want a garden" kick...thanks Polly!). I thought it was so cute that we had these garden gnome magnets on the side of the fridge...keeping watch over my little guys...or are they playing poker??!!! Hehe...

I planted several flower bulbs/plants outdoors...but the backyard patio still needs some sprucing up before I will photograph it...lol! I even got a little wall fountain and lots of little garden angels to adorn the yard...can't wait till my first rose appears!

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have been going on a LOT of buying trips...mostly to get things for myself...hehe...but you know how I always enjoy showing off my the latest additions...

Even if the real plants don't work out because of my lack of a green thumb...at least I will have these little plastic beauties ;)

Found a bag of these soft plastic flowers at a church sale...not sure what their original use was (any thoughts let me know!), but I just enjoyed the colorfulness and variety of them...I put them in this vintage jewelry box that I also scored at a church sale...it's like a "mini flower market"...

I found this cute vintage baby doll with a cute crocheted dress the same day at another sale...

And a pretty vintage linen with an orange flower basket...

I have been super busy this week getting my studio cleaned up and organized (finally!)...so I have been away from blogland and may continue to be for awhile...but once I get things all situated I will be back as usual...till then...have a beautiful week!
